Pine Bluffs History

Once known as Rock Ranch, Pine Bluffs was renamed by railroad officials after seeing the multitude of pine trees on the bluffs overlooking the town. Pine Bluffs, Wyoming is located very near to the Wyoming-Nebraska border, and in 1868 only consisted of a tent and a slab shack with a chimney. However, it began to grow exponentially when cattle herds moved through on the Texas Trail. By 1884, Pine Bluffs was one of the largest cattle shipping points along the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1898, a general store was opened to accommodate the influx in population, and remained open well into the 20th century. By 1909 more businesses opened, including the Pine Bluffs Lighting Company, which used a new way of processing gas to give the town a brilliant lighting. Businesses were not the only thing to thrive in the area though, as many farmers had booming crops that they could show off at the Harvest Festival held annually. The main feature of the festival was the Grain Palace, an exhibition hall that is made entirely out of grain crops.

One of the most popular places to visit in Pine Bluffs is the Texas Trail Museum. The museum is working to preserve the history and heritage of Laramie County, and hopes to educate future generations of the history of the area through its abundance of displays. Furthermore, Pine Bluffs is a crossroads between Interstate 80 and US Route 30, a highway that spans the entire United States and is a road trip hotspot much like Route 66. Locals also can visit the Community Center, which provides fun activities for both adults and children on a regular basis.
