Originally, Burns was a thought to be a German-Lutheran settlement named New Berlin, and was even originally marketed that way in 1907. It was not uncommon in those times to see communities set up for varying ethnic backgrounds as immigration was constant, and it was difficult for people to communicate and work with people in the New World due to language and cultural differences. Later, the town was named Luther after the German religious leader Martin Luther, still keeping with the German-Lutheran culture. Eventually it was renamed Burns which has stuck to this day. It was also home to the J. Ross Carpenter’s Federal Land & Securities Co. which was founded in 1905 and served as the center for the Golden Prairie District.
